Class 3 were very excited to learn that their Food Technology project would involve biscuits…just not for them! The task was to create a new biscuit for the staff room so it had to be not too messy to eat, dunkable in a cup of tea and, of course, delicious. The children had very strong opinions about what the staff would like and after tasting a few well known brands to see what features they wanted to incorporate into their own offering, got busy looking for recipes.

The following week filled the junior corridor with some mouth-watering smells of baking. We had a gluten free lemon shortbread, vintage chocolate chip cookies, millionaire’s shortbread (we had to alter this recipe slightly as Miss Brearey was a little apprehensive about making caramel safely!), chocolate crinkle biscuits and ginger biscuits. The children did all the weighing, mixing, kneading, cutting AND washing up! The selection of biscuits were offered in the staff room the next day and the adults in school dutifully ate them as well as providing feedback. They were very impressed with the final products with some comments including, “I could eat a whole slab of this”, “perfection” and “lovely strong flavours. There were still areas for improvement with some Simon Cowell-esque comments including “visually unappealing” “too messy for marking books” and “needs more ginger!”. The children took all of the feedback very well and were excited at the prospect of video feedback from Mrs Ballard.

As you can see from the pictures, we take biscuit making very seriously in Class 3…
