This week we have been looking at natural selection, and how animals adapt to suit their environment. We looked closely at Darwin’s finches, found on that Galapagos Islands, and observed how they have different shaped beaks to suit the types of food they would eat in their natural habitats. We then explored this for ourselves by setting up four different ‘islands’ in the classroom, each containing a different kind of food source. The children chose their own beak (peg, tweezers, syringe, oven gloves or a paper beak) and explored what kind of foods they could pick up using their chosen beaks. Here are some photographs of the children in action.
