Sixteen brave debaters battled this morning for the title of Willow Brook Champion in our Balloon Debate. After a half-term full of learning about Charles Darwin and how he changed the world, the children were asked to think of who they would nominate to travel alongside him… who did they see as a world changer?

It took a little research and a lot of speech writing, but teachers finally nominated sixteen finalists to speak in the event. You’ll see from picture of  the loaded balloon that it was filled by a broad range of contenders and the speeches were full of passion!

After a close-fought event, Florence in Year 6 and Reggie in Year 3 won the vote! Florence spoke with skill about Emmeline Pankhurst – a distant relative of hers! She connected brilliantly with her audience. Reggie was full of knowledge about Isambard Kingdom Brunel and had expression and joy when he spoke.

Hearing 5 year olds stand their ground and talk with clarity and confidence alongside our Year 6 children was a joy! They can certainly hold their own! Just as marvellous was welcoming parents, carers and grandparents to join the children. What a great way to end a whole-school topic and a very busy half term!
