Over a series of art sessions, as part of our ‘History’s Greatest Invaders’ topic, we created these beautiful mixed media scenes of Viking longboats sailing towards their next invasion!  First we used the technique of wax resist painting to create interesting skylines.  Then we used various painting techniques to create the waves: splatter painting, sprinkling salt onto wet paint and wrapping Clingfilm around wet paint to create interesting effects as it dried.  We then ripped the paintings to create waves which we stuck on top of our skylines- our background was complete!  Then we studied Viking longboats, looking at the dragon heads and the shields Vikings used in battle.  We used water colour paints and felt tips to create textured longboats and placed them in amongst the waves.  The final job was to create a sail for the boat using shading techniques to create a 3D windblown effect.
