We are now in the port of Callao, seven miles from Lima. We are making a trip to the island of San Lorenzo just off the coast of Lima. We have the opportunity to examine the ruins of the 1746 Lima-Callao earthquake. I have found fossils and shells on the island that I will look into more later.
On the island of San Lorenzo, there is proof of elevation within the recent period. On the bay of the island a mountain side has been worn into three obscure terraces. Which were covered in masses of shells many hundred tons in weight, of species now existing on the beach.
The HMS Beagle has finally set off westward, returning to England, though it will still be more than a year before we arrive there.
