Year 5 Poems

Since returning to school we have immersed ourselves in the book, ‘The Lost Words’, a beautifully illustrated and written collection of poems about nature. The book was inspired by the removal of everyday nature words from a children’s dictionary. The words were removed because they weren’t used enough by children – a real shame. As such, it is the perfect book to launch into with poetry and oracy at the heart of our learning this week.

We began by analysing other poems within the book, seeking out structural and language features – metaphors, similes, alliteration, the fonts used, indentation of lines, etc. Afterwards, we examined other poems within the book and used highly ambitious vocabulary to describe the images. This culminated with the children creating their own poems and then, importantly, performing them to the rest of the class. Suffice to say they have made me extremely proud with their confidence and their creativity to produce such excellent pieces of writing.

As you can see from the photographs below, the children carefully prepared their poems to read aloud, performing them using wonderful intonation, tone, volume and action – it was a treat to watch.
