Understanding the order of things that happened a long time ago is an incredibly difficult concept- especially when you’re 7 years old! After discussing that the stone age was before Class 3 were born, before their parents were born, before Mrs Ballard was born…lots of them scratched their heads at the idea that it was thousands of years ago.
To try and understand just how long ago it was, the fact that it was before electricity/cars/ipads and that there were most definitely no dinosaurs around, we created our own timeline on top court. We measured out 1,000 years as 1m and compared different historical events, first predicting when we thought they were and seeing where they went on our gigantic timeline. Unfortunately, our timeline didn’t quite have space on top court to include the dinosaurs…they would have been out the school gate and onto Willow Brook!
