To coincide with the excitement of the FIFA World Cup, Willow Brook brought the tournament to school! Throughout June and July, children from Years 3 to 6 proudly represented different nations as they took part in a thrilling lunchtime World Cup tournament.
Eight teams were split into two groups, with each team playing three group-stage matches. After some fantastic football, England and Argentina progressed from Group A, while Senegal and Spain advanced from Group B to the semi-finals.
The semi-finals produced two exciting contests, setting up a thrilling final between Senegal and Spain. In front of a sold-out Willow Brook crowd, the final had everything except a goal! With neither side able to break the deadlock, the match was decided by a dramatic penalty shootout. Senegal held their nerve to win 2–1 on penalties and were crowned Willow Brook World Cup champions.
The entire tournament was a huge success. The teamwork, sportsmanship and positive attitudes shown by all of the children were outstanding, and it was wonderful to see the whole school community come together to support the event. It was a fantastic experience and one we would be delighted to run again in the future.
At our recent closing ceremony, we celebrated the tournament by reflecting on the many positive memories, presenting certificates and special awards, and officially crowning Senegal as the Willow Brook 2026 World Cup champions. Congratulations to everyone who took part and helped make the event such a memorable success!
