Its a new year and a new competition. We’ve got a new team and thanks to Friends of Willow Brook, a shiny new kit. Thankfully though, we’ve got that same great sporting attitude and have progressed through to the next round.

I took eight excited boys to East Leake to play against Brookside in the Rushcliffe Primary Schools football cup. It’s been many years since I last remember having a team of such disciplined, hard working, organised, and brave boys! The back two were flawlessly solid, the mid fielders full of energy and the strikers played with a calm maturity. It was a close match, and after going one goal ahead before half time, was ours for the taking. Thankfully our goalkeeper had a cracking final five minutes, the boys soaked up the pressure and I felt a wave of relief when the final whistle went. One – nil and through to the next round!

The result was great but what meant more to me was taking a group of eight of the most mature, positive and respectful boys to another school to represent Willow Brook. Maybe this team will go all the way….
